Essential Oil Basics

Have you been wondering what essential oils are and why they have become incredibly popular? They may seem "new age" and the latest trend, however that couldn't be further from the truth. Yes, they have been rediscovered in recent years, but essential oils have been around since ancient times, and for good reason. They are nature's medicine.

Essential oils were man’s first medicine. God created plants to feed and heal our bodies. In 1817 the Ebers Papyrus, a medical scroll over 870 feet long, was discovered that dated back to 1500 BC. The scroll included over 800 different herbal prescriptions and remedies. Other scrolls described a high success rate in treating 81 different diseases. Many of the remedies contained myrrh and honey. Myrrh is still recognized for its ability to help with infections of the skin and throat and to regenerate skin tissue. Because of its effectiveness in preventing bacterial growth, myrrh was also used for embalming.

"Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing. -Ezekiel 47:12

What is an essential oil? Essential oils are the essences of plants. They carry vital nutrition throughout the plant and protect it from disease. These oils can do the same for humans! Oils are distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruits, rinds, resins and herbs and consist of over 100 organic compounds called constituents. When distilled properly, these oils can support every system of your body, from your muscle and circulatory system to your hormones, respiratory and immune systems. What’s even more exciting is that the molecules that comprise these oils are so small that they can cross the blood brain barrier, positively affecting your brain and emotions!

Pure and properly distilled essential oils can support our body in six specific ways. They fight against unfriendly microbes. They can balance bodily functions (creating homeostasis). These oils can raise our bodily frequencies (promoting health) and act as antioxidants to clean up unwanted waste within our cells. Essential oils can have a wonderfully positive effect on our emotions and enhance our spiritual awareness as well.

It is very important to note that God designed the essence of plants to be used in combination with prayer. Essential oil frequencies can be affected by thoughts. Negative thoughts can lower essential oil frequencies by 12 MHz while positive thoughts raise frequencies by 10 MHz! Prayer can make an even greater difference, raising the frequency levels by 15 MHz.1 Biblical application of essential oils was always combined with prayer. The intent and righteousness of the person applying the oil, as well as the faith of the receiver, has a great deal to do with the prognosis for success in healing.

“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the lord.” -James 5:14

The quality of essential oils you use is of utmost importance. The brand you use must be distilled properly and 100% pure to receive therapeutic benefits. Make sure you throughly research a brand before use as you do not want to unknowingly be using an essential oil with synthetic materials or harmful chemicals.

There are three ways in which to use essential oils. You can apply them topically, ingest them, or inhale them. When applying topically, I suggest that you start slowly and begin by applying them to the bottom of your feet. Typically, one drop of oil is all you will need as essential oils are very potent. As you begin to learn how your body accepts them you can start applying them to the area of concern. Some oils have a higher vibration than others and can feel warm on the skin. If that is the case, use a fatty oil such as olive oil or coconut oil to slow the vibration and absorption into the skin. NEVER use water to sooth the skin as water will actually drive the oils into the skin more quickly. Never apply essential oils in the nose, eyes, or ears. Make sure to dilute any essential oil using a fatty oil when applying to little children. Your body is smart and uses frequency to carry the oils where they are needed most within the body.

Essential oils have been found in the bloodstream in twenty-six seconds when applied topically.

Oils can be inhaled by using a cold-water diffuser, or simply applying a drop two to the hands, rubbing your hands together and cupping them over your nose and mouth while breathing. When you inhale, breath in, or diffuse essential oils, the particles go directly into your lungs. They are then quickly absorbed into the blood stream as they crossthe airway/capillary system. The molecules are transported throughout the body and into each and every cell. Since it only takes a few minutes for blood to circulate, the oil you’ve just inhaled will affect every cell of your body within 20 minutes.

Tests have shown oils reach the heart, liver and thyroid in three seconds when inhaled.

Ingesting oil is typically done sublingually, or in a glass of water. This is not a recommended practice unless you are knowledgeable in the use of essential oils. It is also very important that you are using a brand that is pure and meant for ingestion. If you are interested in learning more about essential oils and the brand I use, please feel free to email me and I will be happy to share more information.

When using essential oils, safety is very important. Every human being is unique and will react to oils differently. If you are on medications or have serious health challenges, consult your physician before use. Essential oils can effect the metabolism of certain medications and rashes can develop as a result of detoxification, especially if the user has a large amount of chemicals trapped in their body (such as smokers and those who have received chemotherapy). Essential oils will also react in abnormal ways in a body that is highly acidic.

If you would like to learn more about essential oils from a biblical perspective, I encourage you to read Dr. David Stewart’s book “Healing Oils of the Bible.”
