As children, most of us learned to swim. This was a preventative measure taken by our parents to ensure our safety around water. Another preventative measure we are accustomed to is a pilot triple-checking a plane before takeoff to ensure everything is working properly. If there is any question about the plane's functionality, it is grounded until it can be fixed. We certainly don't want a warning light going off mid-air!
But why, when it comes to our health, preventative measures are rarely addressed by our healthcare providers? Conventional medicine practices typically do not address nutrition, emotional health, spiritual health or exercise. When you begin to experience aches or pains, conventional medicine either ignores these warning signs because your lab work came back normal, or they tell you it's just part of the aging process. As symptoms increase, conventional medical doctors are required by insurance companies to diagnose (or name) the symptom and then treat it with a pill (or life preserver), which many times, is predetermined by your insurance company.
Functional Medicine, or what we like to call Functional Wellness addresses things differently. These aches and pains are alerting you to dysfunction. Functional Wellness dives deeper to uncover the root cause of the dysfunction. This philosophy involves studying a client’s history, discovering points in time where environmental and behavioral factors may have played a part in creating the dysfunction, pinpointing the root cause, and supporting the body through natural methods. Addressing the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of clients, along with common triggers of disease, will uncover the root cause of dysfunction and guide our clients towards a path of healing.
